Olympic musings - Ari and his medal

The Olympics have started and except for the opening (which was fucking amazing no matter what) and the Ari Abrahamian deal I haven't really gotten in to the spirit of The Olympics yet.

Swedish wrestler Ari Abrahamian threw away his bronze medal in protest after losing his semi-final.

"Abrahamian was beaten in the 84 kg class by eventual gold medal winner Andrea Minguzzi of Italy but was furious with the verdict, shouting at the referee before confronting the judges.

The Athens silver medal winner had to be restrained by teammates and later went on to win a bronze medal match.

But the row continued at the medal ceremony as he only grudgingly mounted the podium and after receiving his medal made a point of taking it off and leaving it in the center of the competition mat.

Swedish fans in the arena disagreed strongly with the original decision, jeering the judges, while coach Leo Myllari also weighed in.

"It's all politics," he said.

The medal was later returned to the sport's governing body."

The opening ceremonies were awesome. It was one of the best opening ceremonies I've seen. And also one of the scariest ceremonies I've seen. That's what you get for running a democracy where people get paid with "The honor of serving your country" instead of food or money or whatever. It's just scary. Nontheless, impressive.

Oh, and please don't call The Olympics an Olympiad. An Olympiad is the four years inbetween The Olympic Games. I cringe that a lousy blogger like me knows this stuff but the MSM doesn't. I just had to get that out there.

Thank you, thank you very much.

Actually, it's correct to refer, as that writer did, to the Summer Olympics as "The Games of the Olympiad">. The Games are supposed to mark and celebrate the beginning of a four year period.
It's that "The Games of" that is so crucial to making the nomenclature correct.

Ari's protest reminds me a lot of that judging controversy that occurred in pairs figure skating during the 2002 winter olympics in Salt Lake City (in the end there were two gold medals awarded). As much as Olympic competition is to be the ultimate platform for competition, it is still possible to be corrupted and can be disasterously flawed through judging controversies.

In Ari's semi-final, the mat judge ruled that Abrahamian had won the 2nd round but he was overruled by the "table judge".

I respect Abrahamian greatly for his guts to protest. It may not be within the olympic ideal or code, but he earned my support.

Last I heard (on the radio today), there was talk of loss of his bronze medal and a lifetime ban from the sport. All for protesting an injustice!

Here is a link to today's NY Times article on Ari's disqualification.
